Over the weekend I got pulled over for a dead license plate bulb. Turns out the bulb was fine, but the contacts inside were super corroded and the bulb was getting intermittent contact. Even after scrubbing the corrosion with a wire brush I couldn’t improve it (gently shutting the trunk was enough to make it flicker on or off) so I ordered co mpletely new   housings co ntaining LEDs off eBay.

They might be a bit too bright. I’m going to have to hit them with some of that spray on tint that bros use on their taillights.

So bright you can see them  during the day!

I say ramp it up even more to the point it glares off the plate so much it’s unreadable.  Maybe use a cleaning product that leaves a particularly reflective coating on the plate.

Sidenote: I switched my interior bulbs to LED and it is AMAZING.  Too bright if you look directly at them, but amazing how you can light up the interior of a big car with such a small bulb.

My car already has what I’ve seen referred to as “porno lighting”. There’s five interior bulbs and four additional map lights. Turn it all o n and it’s like daylight.

You should look into putting a resistor in series with the LEDs to bring the brightness down to something more acceptable and less conducive to blinding tailgaters.

On second thought, though, they're perfect.

Installed these and holy crap they’re offensively bright. One could go out (one has already) and the other is more than enough to keep the plate bright. Also, fun Ford fact these work for:

1990-1999 F-250 | F-350

1999-2016 F-250 | F-350 | F-450 | F-550 Super Duty

26 years and same bulb. Smart.

(One was already replaced because the back is wide open and moisture gets in. Apparently have a new design I pumped full of dielectric grease and it's been happy since).

Luckily that was out of town. The cops here at home  don’t give a shit. I drove around with a dead CHMSL for a month once and didn’t get stopped .

The li ghting is t oo gentle to take a cell phone pic of but there is no shadow anywhere in the car once all the lights  are on.

It doesn't help that MA uses reflective plates. It throws a LOT of light backwards.

My mom got it a lot on her old focus, it also kept corroding away the contacts/house entirely so about once every month or so she’d message saying she’s gotten a heads up that license plate lights were out on it. Small town’s are weird.
